Single or double glazed office partitions: which do you need?

Single glazed partitions suit most meeting rooms and offices, especially with acoustic laminated glass. Double glazed partitions add a second pane and an air gap, improving sound reduction by roughly 8 to 12 dB and allowing integral blinds, at about one and a half to two times the cost. Use them where conversations must stay private.

How big is the difference in sound?

A good single acoustic pane reaches around Rw 35 to 38 dB; a double glazed wall with acoustic glass typically reaches around Rw 42 to 48 dB. In practice, speech that is understandable through single glazing becomes a murmur through double glazing.

What else does double glazing add?

The cavity can hold integral venetian blinds, sealed away from dust and controlled with a knob or motor. Double glazed walls also look more substantial, which some clients prefer for directors' offices.

Which rooms need double glazing?

HR and interview rooms, partners' and directors' offices, rooms next to noisy areas such as call centres or kitchens, and medical consulting rooms. For general meeting rooms, single acoustic glass is usually enough.

More questions

Can single glazed partitions have blinds?

Yes, as surface-mounted blinds or roller blinds, but they are less tidy than integral blinds and collect dust.

Is double glazing heavier to install?

Yes, the walls are thicker and heavier, and the door needs to match. We check ceiling and floor fixings at survey.
