Double glazed partitions

A double glazed partition has two separate panes of glass in the same wall with an air gap between them, which cuts sound transfer far more than a single pane. It is the usual choice for directors' offices, HR rooms and any room where conversations must stay private.

Guide price: £480 to £760 per m² of glazed wall, fitted, ex VAT. Integral blinds and doors are priced separately.

How do double glazed office partitions work?

The cavity between the panes is where most of the sound reduction comes from, and it also leaves room for integral venetian blinds that open and close without collecting dust. Frameless double glazed systems are available as well as framed ones.

With acoustic laminated glass on both faces, well-built double glazed walls typically reach around Rw 42 to 48 dB in laboratory tests. The result on site also depends on the ceiling, floor and any gaps around the wall, which we check at survey.

When are double glazed office partitions the right choice?

  • Directors' and HR offices
  • Interview, consulting and quiet rooms
  • Rooms next to noisy open-plan areas

Double glazed partitions: questions

How much quieter is double glazing than single glazing?

Typically 8 to 12 dB better on paper, which most people hear as roughly half as loud. Speech in the next room goes from understandable to a murmur.

Can you fit blinds inside a double glazed partition?

Yes. Integral blinds sit sealed in the cavity, so they never need dusting, and can be operated with a knob, a slider or a motor.

Is double glazing needed for a meeting room?

Not always. For most meeting rooms a single acoustic laminated pane is enough. Double glazing earns its place where confidential or sensitive conversations happen.

Does the door let the sound out?

Doors are usually the weak point. We fit acoustic seals, drop-down seals at the threshold and solid or double glazed door leaves to keep the door close to the wall's performance.
