Switchable smart glass

Switchable smart glass, also called privacy glass, is laminated glass with a liquid-crystal film inside that switches from clear to opaque white when the power is turned off or on. It gives a meeting room full visual privacy on demand without blinds.

Guide price: £650 to £1,100 per m² of switchable glass, fitted, ex VAT, in addition to the partition system.

How do switchable smart glass work?

The glass is wired to a low-voltage supply and controlled by a wall switch, remote, room booking panel or building management system. When frosted it still lets light through, so the room stays bright.

Switchable glass can be used for a whole room or just a band at eye level to manage cost. It needs coordination with the electrician for the supply and switching, which we organise as part of the project.

When are switchable smart glass the right choice?

  • Boardrooms and client meeting rooms
  • HR, medical and confidential rooms
  • Rooms that double as presentation spaces

Switchable smart glass: questions

How does switchable glass work?

A thin film of liquid crystals sits between two layers of glass. With power applied the crystals line up and the glass is clear; without power they scatter light and the glass looks frosted.

Can people see through switchable glass when it is frosted?

No, shapes are not visible through it, though some light and shadow can be seen when there is a strong light behind it.

How much electricity does smart glass use?

Very little, typically only a few watts per square metre while it is switched on.

Can existing glass be made switchable?

Switchable film can be applied to some existing glass, but the best results come from switchable laminated glass made to measure.
